PhonePe Launches Instagram Micro-Drama Series ‘Passport Laapata’
PhonePe has launched ‘Passport Laapata’, its first Instagram micro-drama series, marking a shift towards content-led brand storytelling.
Instagram has emerged as one of the most preferred platforms for brands to reach out to a large audience and PhonePe has just taken a leap into content-led marketing with its first micro-drama series on the platform.
Kanika Marwaha, Head of Social Media Marketing, PhonePe announced the launch and said, “This is a milestone for us and for our marketing team. She said in a LinkedIn post that the company’s first micro-drama has gone live on PhonePe’s Instagram page and thanked the internal team and agency partners who were involved in bringing it to life.
The series, “Passport Laapata”, is about a bunch of friends dealing with the fallout of a farewell party gone wrong. The first episode begins with a friend, Sid, finding out that he’s missing his passport just nine hours before his flight to the United States. The story is told as a mystery, as the group tries to piece together what happened the night before, which should keep viewers coming back for more episodes to come.

Micro-Drama Format:
The series is a perfect fit for Instagram Reels, and is in the micro-drama format that combines short episodic storytelling, cliffhangers and mobile-first viewing. The format has exploded in popularity around the world as more and more people turn to short-form content on platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok.
This move for PhonePe expands its social media approach beyond product-centric campaigns and content collaborations with creators. Now, the fintech company is experimenting with original entertainment content as a way to deepen audience engagement and boost retention.

It also indicates a wider change in digital marketing, with brands spending on serialised storytelling, creator-led content, podcasts and web series as advertising becomes more and more embedded in entertainment. Marketers are shifting from promotional messaging to the use of narratives and recurring characters to better connect with consumers.
PhonePe's youth-oriented storyline, centred on friendship, travel plans and a missing passport, mirrors themes commonly seen in successful social-first content. The episodic mystery format is designed to encourage repeat viewing as each episode reveals new clues.
