PhonePe Marks 10-Year Milestone with Data-Driven Gratitude Campaign Conceptualised by Ogilvy

Decade of Digital Transformation: PhonePe’s Consumer-Centric Tribute

Digital payments platform PhonePe has launched its 10-year anniversary brand film, celebrating a decade of driving digital inclusion across India. Spearheaded by Ogilvy Mumbai, the campaign shifts focus away from traditional corporate milestones, transforming complex scale data—representing over 70 crore registered users—into an expression of consumer gratitude.

The Creative Device: Speed-Reading 70 Crore Names

At the center of the campaign film is Shahu Supreme, holder of the Indian record for speaking 494 words per minute. In an effort to visually convey the magnitude of PhonePe’s user base, Shahu attempts to call out real PhonePe consumers by name at maximum speed.

The film reveals that even at record-breaking speech velocity, it would take 980 consecutive days to name all 70 crore users. The narrative leverages this data visualization device to bridge the gap between large-scale financial metrics and individual human connections.

Shifting Narratives: From Numbers to Human Impact

The campaign highlights how micro-transactions—from an individual's first contactless payment to daily merchant transactions powering small businesses—have collectively driven India's fintech adoption over the past ten years.

Commenting on the campaign direction, Amit Doshi, Group Chief Marketing Officer at PhonePe, stated: "Over the last decade, PhonePe's journey has been intrinsically linked with the everyday progress of millions of Indians. With this brand film, beyond marking a 10-year milestone, our primary intent was an expression of gratitude toward our customers. By attempting the near-impossible task of thanking our users by name, we are honoring the individuals across Bharat who have powered this decade of progress with us."

Ogilvy on Creative Disruption Through Data

Sharing insights on the strategy behind the film, Akshay Seth, Senior Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy Mumbai, emphasized the power of creative data interpretation: “70 crore in 10 years is an extraordinary number, but numbers tell us only one side of the story. We wanted to make this milestone about the people behind the number. Sometimes double tapping on such rich data gives the best creative device and disruption. We got the record holder for being the fastest speaker and put him to the test by getting him to try and name every PhonePe user.”
