OpenAI, the creator behind ChatGPT, has named Sheeladitya Mohanty as its new Marketing Lead for India. The announcement was shared by Mohanty via LinkedIn, where he expressed his excitement to contribute to OpenAI’s mission of “building AGI for the benefit of humanity.”
This move arrives just a week after OpenAI revealed plans to open its first office in New Delhi. The company has formally established an entity in India and begun hiring local talent to strengthen its relationships across government, corporate, developer, and educational sectors .
A Seasoned Marketer Enters the AI Arena
Sheeladitya Mohanty brings to OpenAI a rich marketing background spanning major tech companies. He previously served as Marketing Lead for Meta AI and Facebook across the Asia-Pacific region—where he was instrumental in Meta’s brand transitions and campaign rollouts . His tenure also includes impactful work in India, such as overseeing the Facebook-to-Meta rebrand, and leading campaigns like Fuel for India and cross-app brand activations .
Before his time at Meta, Mohanty contributed to both Microsoft and Nokia India in roles centered on app marketing, developer ecosystems, cloud services, and partner management . He is an alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur (Class of 2009) .
