Makro Colombia has been recognised globally for its sustainability campaign, 'Life Extending Stickers', an initiative that uses simple packaging design to encourage consumers to reduce food waste and make better use of fresh produce.

Created by VML Colombia and Grey Colombia, the campaign addresses a common consumer behaviour where fruits and vegetables are discarded or ignored simply because they appear ripe. According to the campaign, nearly 40% of fruits and vegetables are wasted due to the perception that ripe produce is no longer suitable for purchase or consumption.

Food Sustainability:

To challenge this mindset, the agencies transformed ordinary fruit stickers into educational tools that help shoppers understand different stages of ripeness. The stickers provide guidance on when produce is best consumed, tips for extending freshness and recipe suggestions based on the fruit or vegetable's colour and maturity.

By encouraging consumers to use produce throughout its natural lifecycle rather than discarding it prematurely, the campaign aims to reduce household food waste while helping families get more value from their grocery purchases.

The initiative demonstrates how a small piece of packaging can be repurposed into an effective communication tool that combines consumer education with sustainability.
