Elon Musk's X Developing Downvoting Feature Resembling 'Dislike' Button
Although not officially announced, recent findings suggest the 'downvote' feature may resemble a 'dislike' button rather than a Reddit-style downvote icon
Elon Musk-run X is working on a downvoting feature aimed at improving the ranking of replies. Although the company hasn't officially announced its plans, recent findings reported by TechCrunch suggest that the 'downvote' feature may resemble a 'dislike' button rather than a Reddit-style downvote icon.
Code references found in the X iOS app reveal a button resembling a broken heart icon next to the platform's heart-shaped 'like' button, along with direct references to a 'downvote' feature. This feature was initially tested by the company in 2021, prior to Elon Musk's acquisition.
Earlier this month, reverse engineer Aaron Perris (@aaronp613 on X) discovered references in X's iOS app indicating the development of a downvote feature. He has now found additional image files in the app showing the button styled as a broken heart, along with more direct references to the feature itself.
Initially, X tested both upvoting and downvoting buttons across all posts. However, the latest tests indicate that X is considering allowing downvotes only on replies.
In June, Musk confirmed the rollout of a new feature that will hide all likes by default for X users.
