Zomato’s going-out platform District has launched a new bill splitting feature called Splitpay which allows restaurant diners to split and pay their share of a bill directly via the app.

Rahul Ganjoo, Chief Executive Officer of District by Zomato, said the product is designed to address one of the biggest irritants of dining in a group- collecting payments after one person pays the total bill. The feature was announced by him.

Solving a Common Dining Problem:

Splitpay allows diners to evenly split the bill at a restaurant, or set individual amounts for each member of a group.

Participants can then pay their respective shares through the District app itself, eliminating the need to exchange UPI IDs, scan QR codes or manually calculate individual contributions.

“Many groups are faced with a familiar process after eating together,” Ganjoo announced the feature.

"One person pays the bill. Someone takes a photo of it. Someone opens a calculator. Someone says they'll transfer their share later. Most forget," he wrote.

Campaign Featuring Baman Irani and Anupam Kher:

District has released a campaign film featuring veteran actors Baman Irani and Anupam Kher to kick start the launch.

The ad plays out like a playful back and forth between the two actors about who should pay the bill at the restaurant, a situation many consumers can relate to when dining out with friends.

The campaign uses humour to showcase how Splitpay allows every diner to instantly chip in their share, avoiding awkward conversations about reimbursements and payment reminders.

District said users who settle their portion of a bill through Splitpay will also be eligible for cashback rewards.

The company hopes the added incentive will encourage adoption while making bill settlements faster and more convenient for groups.
