Spotify Boosts Revenue, Crosses 300M Premium Users

Spotify had a strong second quarter of 2026, smashing through 300 million Premium subscribers worldwide for the first time as revenue rose 14% year-on-year to €4.78 billion, and operating income jumped 61% to €655 million.

In its Q2 2026 shareholder update, the company said monthly active users (MAUs) grew 12% to 777 million, and ad-supported users rose 14% to 494 million.

Spotify added 7 million Premium subscribers in the quarter, surpassing its own guidance of 299 million and crossing the 300-million mark ahead of expectations.

India, Indonesia move into monetisation phase:

Despite the subscriber milestone, Spotify said its next phase of growth would be more about monetisation than user growth, particularly in emerging markets such as India and Indonesia.

"India and Indonesia are very populous, very lucrative markets that have driven more than expected user growth over the last couple of quarters," co-CEO Alex Norström said during the earnings call. The company now has scale in these markets and is focused on driving higher conversion and revenue generation.

Spotify said it has started to roll out changes to its product experience, including changes to sign-up flows, an increase in the advertising load, limitations in the free tier and the removal of support for some lower-end Android devices.

“Now we’re starting to pull the monetisation lever” in those markets, co-CEO Gustav Söderström said.

Spotify admitted the strategy could slow monthly active user growth in the near term but expects it to improve user quality and conversion over time. The company said it does not expect Premium subscriber growth to be impacted right away.

Advertising shifts toward automation:

The results also pointed to Spotify’s increasing focus on automated advertising.

Revenue from ad-supported services grew just 1% year-on-year to €446 million, with the company saying automated and self-serve advertising platforms were the biggest contributors to overall advertising growth.

Management commentary during the earnings call said automated and self-serve channels accounted for nearly 40% of ad-supported revenue in the quarter, up from just over 30% in the prior quarter.

Spotify finished the quarter with 33,000 active advertisers, up 60% year-over-year, and about 7,000 advertisers using its AI-powered tools to create audio advertising assets.
