NBA & Skechers Spotlight Indian Basketball Dreams

The National Basketball Association (NBA), in partnership with Skechers, has launched the much-anticipated second season of “Hoop Nation,” a lyrical docuseries that shines a spotlight on the inspiring basketball journeys emerging from every corner of India. This four-part series, now streaming on the NBA India YouTube channel, blends powerful storytelling with the vibrant beats of Indian hip-hop, giving viewers a unique and emotional look into the lives of players, fans, and mentors who are shaping the future of Indian basketball.

Real Stories, Real Impact

Building on the success of its first season, “Hoop Nation” Season 2 dives even deeper, featuring a diverse cast of protagonists whose stories reflect the spirit and resilience of Indian basketball. This season introduces:

  • Ishrat Akhter: An international wheelchair basketball player from Baramulla, Kashmir, whose journey is a testament to overcoming adversity and breaking barriers.
  • Deepak P. Babu: A passionate basketball fan, mentor, and content creator from Alappuzha, Kerala, who is inspiring the next generation through his dedication to the sport.
  • The Lao Family: A father-daughter duo from Kolkata’s Indo-Chinese community, showing how basketball can unite families and communities.
  • Farooque Shaikh: A mentor from Mumbai’s Nagpada neighborhood, working tirelessly to nurture young talent and use basketball as a tool for positive change.

Each episode not only tells a story of personal triumph but also showcases the innovative Skechers Basketball shoes, highlighting the brand’s “Comfort that Performs®” promise—gear designed to support athletes at every level.

Where Basketball Meets Hip-Hop

What sets “Hoop Nation” apart is its integration of new-age Indian hip-hop. The docuseries features original music from artists like Straight Outta Srinagar (SOS), ThirumaLi, EPR Iyer, and QK. Their lyrics and beats bring the stories to life, capturing the challenges, dreams, and victories of the featured players and their communities. This blend of music and sport creates a rich, immersive experience that resonates with young audiences and basketball fans alike.

A Shared Vision for Indian Basketball

Rajah Chaudhry, NBA Asia Head of Strategy and NBA India Country Head, describes the series as a celebration of basketball’s unifying power:

“Hoop Nation season two embodies the spirit of basketball in India – a game that unites, inspires, and drives change.”
He emphasizes that Skechers shares the NBA’s vision of expanding basketball’s reach in India, bringing authentic, uplifting stories to the forefront and offering more opportunities for fans and players to connect with the sport.

Rahul Vira, CEO of Skechers South Asia, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the broader impact of the partnership:

“At Skechers, we believe in the transformative power of sport to inspire communities and drive long-term impact. Our continued association with the NBA through initiatives like Hoop Nation and the ACG Jr. NBA program highlights our commitment to fostering the growth of basketball in India at every level.”
He also notes Skechers’ dedication to equipping Indian players with high-performance footwear and apparel, as seen with NBA stars like Joel Embiid and Julius Randle endorsing the brand.

Beyond the Screen: Growing the Game

The NBA and Skechers partnership extends beyond digital content. Skechers served as the official kit partner for the ACG Jr. NBA program, India’s largest school-based basketball tournament for under-14 players. Last year, this initiative reached over 4,000 youth from more than 500 schools, underscoring both brands’ commitment to nurturing grassroots talent and making basketball accessible to all.

“Hoop Nation” Season 2 is more than a docuseries—it’s a celebration of grit, diversity, and the unbreakable spirit of Indian basketball. By combining storytelling, music, and real-life journeys, the NBA and Skechers are not only inspiring the next generation of players but also building a stronger, more inclusive basketball community across India
