Google is introducing a new set of updates for its AI-powered Search experiences, aiming to make it easier for users to discover websites, trusted publishers, creators and online communities while using features like AI Mode and AI Overviews.

The company said the changes are designed to strengthen how people connect with information across the web as generative AI becomes more deeply integrated into Search. Rather than keeping users inside AI-generated summaries alone, the updates focus on encouraging deeper exploration through links, context and source visibility.

Google Expands AI Discovery:

One of the biggest additions is a new “explore further” section that will appear at the end of many AI responses. The feature will surface related articles, case studies and deeper analysis tied to a user’s search topic. For example, someone researching urban green spaces may be directed towards detailed reporting on projects like Seoul’s stream restoration efforts or New York’s High Line development.

Google is also introducing features tied to publisher subscriptions. Users will now start seeing links from their subscribed news sources highlighted within AI Mode and AI Overviews, making it easier to access content they already pay for and trust. According to Google, early testing showed users were significantly more likely to click links clearly labelled as part of their subscriptions.

The company is also leaning more heavily into human perspectives and community-driven content. AI responses will now feature previews from public discussions, forums and social media conversations, alongside clearer attribution such as creator handles, usernames or community names. The move reflects a broader shift in search behaviour, where users increasingly look for firsthand experiences and peer recommendations alongside traditional search results.

AI Search Gets Smarter:

Another update expands inline linking directly inside AI-generated responses. Instead of placing sources separately, Google will insert contextual links next to specific parts of an answer, helping users move seamlessly from summaries to deeper web content while reading. For publishers and marketers, this could create more direct click-through opportunities from AI-driven search experiences.

Desktop users will also begin seeing hover previews for inline links inside AI responses. These previews provide additional details about a linked page before users click, including the website name and page title. Google said the feature is aimed at improving confidence and transparency around external links within AI-powered search.

For publishers, creators and brands, the updates signal Google’s attempt to balance AI-generated answers with traffic flow back to the open web. As AI search experiences continue evolving, concerns around declining publisher visibility and reduced website clicks have become increasingly prominent across the digital media industry.

The changes also highlight a larger shift in how search itself is evolving. Instead of acting only as a gateway to websites, AI-powered search is becoming a layered discovery environment where summaries, recommendations, creator insights and transactions coexist within a single interface.

For marketers, the updates reinforce the growing importance of authority-driven content, community engagement and search visibility beyond traditional SEO rankings. As AI reshapes user behaviour, discoverability may increasingly depend not just on keywords, but on trust, originality and contextual relevance across platforms.
