Dentsu Creative Isobar Channels Nostalgic 80s Hindi Cinema in New ‘Collector’ Campaign for BGMI

In a brilliant blend of gaming culture, retro nostalgia, and local storytelling, agency Dentsu Creative Isobar has rolled out a new campaign for KRAFTON India’s Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). Built around the catchy tagline, “Jo BGMI par collection level badhaye, woh Collector ban jaaye,” the campaign redefines in-game pride by linking BGMI’s Collection Level feature with one of India’s most revered social titles: the government ‘Collector’.

By leveraging the melodrama, chaos, and over-the-top tropes of 1980s Hindi cinema, the campaign turns an in-game vanity metric into a symbol of ultimate respect and familial prestige.

A Nostalgic Spin on In-Game Achievements

The creative framework relies on two ad films—’Akkad Bakkad Collector’ and ’Nikamme Ki Amma’—both playing off classic Bollywood narrative archetypes:

  • Akkad Bakkad Collector: Captures the frenetic preparation and high-stakes chaos in a small-town government office awaiting the arrival of a top official.
  • Nikamme Ki Amma: Follows an overly melodramatic mother yearning for her seemingly idle son to achieve a position of authority and bring honor to the family.

In both instances, the narrative builds intense dramatic anticipation before landing on a humorous twist: the "Collector" status being celebrated isn’t a government administrative rank, but a player’s high inventory level and rare outfit collection in BGMI.

Gaming Vanity Meets Cultural Context

The campaign positions BGMI’s Collection Level feature not just as a storehouse for rare skins and items, but as a digital badge of honor earned through time, effort, and loyalty.

Highlighting the strategy behind the launch, Srinjoy Das, Director of Marketing and BGMI Product Management at KRAFTON India, noted:

"Collection Levels are an incredible vanity metric that players in BGMI swear by. It’s an instant source of pride, and a testament to the time spent in the game over the years. The return of this campaign was received with heavy engagement on socials, and we are looking forward to a long term sustenance campaign around this quirky theme."

Playing It Straight: The Art of Irreverent Humour

The campaign’s success lies in treating pop-culture clichés with deadpan seriousness, contrasting small-town ambition with digital gaming culture.

Elaborating on the creative vision, Abhijat Bharadwaj, Chief Creative Officer at Dentsu Creative Isobar, shared:

"Good humour often comes from taking something everyone knows and looking at it from a completely unexpected angle. With BGMI, ‘Collector’ gave us exactly that opportunity. It’s a word that instantly conjures a very specific world of authority, ambition, and family pride - so we decided to put that world in the middle of a gaming story."

"The fun was in playing it completely straight. We leaned into the melodrama, the chaos and the wonderfully over-the-top storytelling of old Hindi cinema and then let BGMI deliver the punchline. It’s irreverent, rooted in culture and, hopefully, the kind of work that makes you smile before you even realise you are watching a product story."
