Bastian Bandra Closes; Ammakai Set to Rise
Iconic Bastian Bandra shuts down. Hospitality group launches Ammakai, a South Indian dining concept, in its place—and readies a new Bastian Beach Club in Juhu.
Mumbai’s buzzing dining scene has bid farewell to one of its most glamorous names—Bastian Bandra. After nearly a decade of being the go-to destination for Bollywood celebrities, influencers, and food lovers, the restaurant has officially shut down. Known as much for its indulgent menus as for its star-studded brunches, the Bandra outlet was more than a restaurant; it was a cultural landmark.
The official announcement was made by Bastian Hospitality, which described the closure as “the end of an era.” Social media tributes poured in from loyal customers and fans, recalling everything from towering dessert platters to the signature crab dishes that once dominated Instagram feeds.
Rise of Bastian and Its Cultural Impact
Founded in 2016 by restaurateurs Ranjit Bindra and Kunal Jani, Bastian was envisioned as a modern, aspirational dining spot. With chef Kelvin Cheung at the helm, the brand quickly earned its reputation for global fusion menus and artfully plated dishes designed to be both delicious and “Insta-worthy.”
The restaurant became more than just a place to eat—it turned into a social ritual. Sunday brunch at Bastian became a celebrity parade, with stars like Tiger Shroff, Disha Patani, and Katrina Kaif frequently spotted. For many Mumbaikars, Bastian symbolised a new wave of dining where food, lifestyle, and celebrity culture blended seamlessly.
Shilpa Shetty’s Ownership Boost
In 2019, Bastian took a major step forward when Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty joined as a co-owner. Her presence not only amplified the restaurant’s celebrity credentials but also pushed the brand into a new phase of expansion.
With her involvement, Bastian launched newer outlets: Bastian at The Top in Dadar, offering rooftop fine dining, and Bastian – The Beach Club in Juhu, which brought a coastal, lounge-style vibe to the city’s west side. Both properties carried forward the signature Bastian experience—luxury interiors, Instagrammable food, and a glamorous clientele.
Controversies Around Ownership
Despite its glitz, the brand’s recent years have been shadowed by controversy. Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra face allegations of defrauding investors of over ₹60 crore between 2015 and 2023. According to reports, the case is under review, with the couple’s representatives clarifying that it is a civil matter rather than a criminal one.
The controversy inevitably cast a shadow over the restaurant group. While no official statement directly linked the Bandra closure to these legal challenges, speculation remains strong. For patrons, however, the farewell to the Bandra outlet feels more nostalgic than scandalous—marking the end of a place where memories were created over cocktails, crab, and conversation.
What Comes Next: Ammakai and New Ventures
As one chapter closes, another begins. Bastian Hospitality has confirmed that the Bandra space will reopen in mid-October 2025 as Ammakai, a new South Indian fine-dining concept. The name, derived from Tamil meaning “the mother’s hand,” reflects the brand’s intent to celebrate authenticity, warmth, and heritage.
Ammakai promises to bring together traditional recipes, regional flavours, and modern presentation. While it will be a departure from Bastian’s coastal fusion identity, the essence of indulgence and premium dining will remain intact. Industry watchers are already calling it one of the most anticipated launches of the year, with many curious to see how Bandra’s food-loving crowd embraces a cultural deep dive into South Indian cuisine.
But that’s not all. Alongside Ammakai, Bastian Hospitality is preparing to launch a new Bastian Beach Club in Juhu. Designed as an upscale party and dining venue, it will combine coastal luxury with the brand’s signature vibrancy—ensuring that the spirit of Bastian continues to thrive, even if its Bandra original has shut its doors.
