Swiggy, the leading on-demand food delivery platform in India, has launched a dedicated ‘High Protein’ category on its marketplace to cater to the growing consumer interest in nutritious and healthy diets. This new section, now available in 30 cities including major metros like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune, features over 5 lakh curated high-protein dishes from more than 35,000 restaurant partners nationwide.

Why the Focus on Protein?

Protein has become a key focus in Indian diets due to rising awareness of its role in health, fitness, and wellness. Reports suggest that a substantial portion of India’s population does not meet recommended daily protein intake levels. For example, a study by IMRB and others shows that nearly 73% of Indians fall short of their protein requirements, and malnutrition-related issues persist in many regions.

Swiggy’s launch comes as part of a broader trend embracing mindful eating and nutrition-conscious food choices, making it easier for consumers to access meals that support healthier lifestyles.

How the ‘High Protein’ Category Works

The new category simplifies the discovery of protein-rich foods in the app. Users can search for keywords like “protein” or “diet” within Swiggy’s platform to reach this section directly. Dishes are carefully curated based on strict nutritional criteria set by Swiggy:

  • Every meal must deliver at least 15 grams of protein per serving.
  • Calorie content should be 700 kcal or less.
  • The protein-to-calorie ratio must be 10% or higher, ensuring the dish is truly protein-dense and not just low-calorie.

Within this category, users can also filter dishes by protein source, such as paneer or soya, catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences. Additionally, when browsing restaurant menus on the app, protein-rich options now appear prominently at the top, easing decision-making.

Consumer Reception and Usage

During the pilot phase, Swiggy reports that over 1.8 million customers engaged with the High Protein category, illustrating strong consumer demand. Metropolitan cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi led the usage, but emerging interest in cities like Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Nagpur reflects the expanding reach of health-conscious eating beyond metros.
