Spotify users who updated the mobile app this week noticed an unexpected visual change- a shimmering green 3D disco ball replacing the platform’s familiar app icon.

The company initially remained cryptic about the update, responding to user discussions on X with the message, “isn’t she lovely?” from its official account.

At first glance, the updated logo appeared to some users like the traditional Spotify icon wrapped in reflective material, leading to widespread speculation online about its purpose.

Spotify Turns Nostalgic:

A Spotify spokesperson later confirmed that the temporary disco-ball icon is part of the company’s celebrations marking 20 years since the platform’s founding.

As part of the anniversary campaign, Spotify has launched a new mobile-only in-app experience titled “Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s).”

The feature gives users a personalised retrospective of their listening history on the platform, including the total number of unique songs streamed, the first track ever played on Spotify and their all-time most-streamed artist.

The experience also includes a custom playlist featuring users’ top 120 most-played songs along with individual play counts.

Music Nostalgia Campaign:

According to the company, both premium subscribers and free-tier users can access the feature.

Similar to Spotify Wrapped, the annual listening recap campaign, the anniversary experience also includes custom social media share cards designed for users to post online.

Alongside the nostalgia-focused campaign, Spotify also revealed its all-time global streaming rankings for artists, albums, songs, podcasts and audiobooks.

According to the platform, Taylor Swift is currently the most-streamed artist in Spotify’s history.

Bad Bunny’s album Un Verano Sin Ti was named the platform’s most-streamed album of all time, while The Weeknd’s song Blinding Lights became the most-streamed individual track.

Spotify also said The Joe Rogan Experience is the most-listened-to podcast on the platform, while A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is the most-streamed audiobook.

Although Spotify was founded in Sweden in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, the streaming service officially launched in the United States in 2011.

The anniversary campaign reflects how streaming platforms are increasingly using nostalgia-driven, personalised experiences and social sharing features to deepen user engagement and strengthen cultural relevance in highly competitive digital entertainment markets.
