McDonald’s Returns to AI Drive-Thru Ordering with Google-Powered ArchIQ Platform
McDonald’s has launched ArchIQ, a new Google-powered AI operating system and voice assistant designed to improve drive-thru ordering and restaurant operations across its US locations.
McDonald’s is introducing another AI-enabled drive-thru ordering system, with the launch of a new operating system powered by artificial intelligence called ArchIQ and a voice assistant named Archy, as part of a broader effort to upgrade restaurant operations in the United States.
The announcement came at the company’s Worldwide convention where McDonald’s called the technology a key part of its longer-term digital transformation strategy.

A Fresh AI Push:
Developed in partnership with Google, ArchIQ aims to simplify drive-thru operations, remove bottlenecks and speed up service across McDonald’s restaurants.
The system powers Archy, an AI-powered voice assistant that can take customer orders at drive-thru lanes and also help with restaurant management tasks.
The company said early tests have shown about 90 percent of customer orders can be filled without human intervention.
Learning from Past Failures:
The rollout is McDonald’s second big move into AI-powered drive-thru ordering after ending its partnership with IBM in 2024.
The previous system was tested at over 100 restaurants but attracted criticism when customers posted viral videos showing ordering mistakes, duplicated menu items and repeated misunderstandings of simple requests.
The incidents highlighted the challenges of using conversational AI in noisy drive-thru environments, where background noise, accents, slang, fast speech and frequent order changes can make voice recognition difficult.

After the IBM pilot wrapped up, McDonald’s said it was still interested in testing out ordering solutions powered by AI.
McDonald’s said ArchIQ is designed to do more than process customer orders.
The platform will also help restaurant managers identify operational problems, predict equipment problems and improve overall efficiency within restaurant operations.
By integrating AI into customer-facing and back-end processes, the company wants to make service more consistent and to ease pressure on staff during peak hours.
