Meta Launches Free Facebook Verified Badge to Tackle AI Impersonation
Meta has launched a free Facebook Verified badge using video selfie verification to help curb AI-generated profiles and impersonation.
Meta Platforms has introduced Facebook Verified, a free verification badge to authenticate users’ identities and combat the proliferation of AI-created profiles and impersonation on Facebook.
The feature, announced Friday, involves a short video selfie, which is compared with a user’s existing profile photos to verify the account is owned by a real person. Once verified, users will receive a real badge that’s visible across key Facebook experiences, including Marketplace, Dating and Groups.
The new verification feature is distinct from Meta Verified, the company’s paid subscription service. Unlike the subscription offering, the new consumer verification is free of charge and is only meant to prove that an account is owned by a real person.

Identity Verification:
This feature is currently only available for eligible personal Facebook accounts of people 18 years or older. It doesn’t support Pages or Professional Mode profiles at this stage.
Users must adhere to the Community Standards of Meta in order to remain eligible, which include policies on fraud, impersonation and other types of inauthentic behaviour.
Meta said the rollout will be phased across international markets before rolling out to more of the platform.

The verification badge will initially be available in high trust areas like Marketplace, Dating, and Groups. The company says it plans to add support for main Feed posts in an upcoming update.
The launch comes as social media platforms face mounting challenges from AI-generated content and fake accounts. Meta hopes that by offering free identity verification, users will be able to identify real profiles, versus automated or impersonating accounts, while building trust throughout its social ecosystem.
