Digi Yatra Adds Driving Licence as Airport Travel ID
Digi Yatra now allows passengers to use driving licences via DigiLocker as a verified identity document for airport travel.

Digi Yatra has expanded its digital identity ecosystem by enabling passengers to use their driving licence, available through DigiLocker, as a verified identity credential for air travel, thus decreasing its dependence on Aadhaar as the sole enrolment document.
Under the new update, existing Digi Yatra users can upload their driving licence to the app, and new users can now register using their Aadhaar or a driving licence. Those with both credentials stored in the app can choose one of them as their main identity document to be matched against their boarding pass at airport checkpoints.
The move is expected to enhance the access to the contactless passenger processing platform of Digi Yatra as India has over 23.6 crore driving licence holders. This also marks another milestone in the platform’s roadmap to support multiple government-issued identity documents through its decentralised Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) architecture launched in October 2025.

Future Roadmap:
The driving licence is fetched from DigiLocker only with the user’s consent, is encrypted and is stored only on the user’s device, the Digi Yatra Foundation said. The foundation added that no personally identifiable information is stored in a central repository and the use of the platform continues to be voluntary.
"Digi Yatra is intended to support multiple trusted identity credentials so that government-issued identity documents can be used securely while users stay in full control of their personal information," said Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, in a statement.
Presently, Digi Yatra is active in 39 airports in India. Since its launch, the platform said it has crossed 25.5 million app downloads and facilitated more than 105 million passenger journeys.
Looking ahead, the foundation said it is preparing to start live international trials after completing an International Air Transport Association (IATA)-aligned proof of concept for international travel.

It also plans to add language support from the current 11 regional languages to all 22 scheduled Indian languages by 2027, and to 26 more airports in the same time frame.
The foundation also said that future updates will introduce support for passport-based verifiable credentials, which will further expand the digital identity ecosystem of Digi Yatra.
