MG Motor India announces joint venture with JSW Group
After much anticipation, the joint venture between MG Motor India and JSW Group has materialized. Here are the comprehensive details.
MG Motor India has officially announced a joint venture with the JSW Group, forming JSW MG Motor India. The focus will be on introducing new energy vehicles in India, with plans for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of JSW Group, revealed intentions to launch new models every 3-6 months post-September 2024, with two expected this year. These models will prioritize local manufacturing and high localization. Production capacity in Halol, Gujarat, will be expanded to accommodate the increased demand, targeting a capacity of 3 lakh units annually by 2030.
JSW MG Motor India aims to lead new energy vehicle sales in India by 2030, also eyeing entry into the premium vehicle segment with the Cyberster convertible electric sports car. The Cyberster features a 77kWh battery, offering a claimed CLTC range of 580km, and an all-wheel-drive system producing 536bhp and 725Nm torque, achieving 0-100kmph in 3.2 seconds. Another version with a 64kWh battery provides a claimed CLTC range of 520km.
Additionally, MG showcased EVs like the MG4 and MG5. The MG4, a larger hatchback, offers two battery options with WLTP ranges of 350km and 452km, while the MG5 estate vehicle comes with a 61.1kWh battery, claiming a range of 402km. These models are likely to be the first launched under the joint venture in India. MG also unveiled the Comet EV concept, a convertible, hinting at exciting prospects in the EV market.
