FSSAI Mandates Bold Nutritional Labels for Packaged Foods in India

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved changes to nutritional information labeling on packaged food items, as reported by PTI. Under the amended Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, total salt, sugar, and saturated fat content must now be prominently displayed in bold and larger font sizes on the packaging.

In an official statement, FSSAI announced its approval of a proposal to enhance the visibility of nutritional information, specifically highlighting total sugar, salt, and saturated fat. This initiative, ratified during the 44th meeting of the Food Authority chaired by Apurva Chandra, aims to empower consumers by improving their understanding of product nutrition and facilitating healthier choices.

The amendment also mandates that the percentage (%) contribution to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for these nutrients be displayed in bold, aligning with existing regulations on serving sizes and nutritional disclosures for packaged foods. The draft notification for these changes will soon be open for public review and feedback.

Per serve percentage (%) contribution to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for total sugar, total saturated fat, and sodium content will be highlighted in bold letters. This aligns with FSSAI Regulation 2(v) and 5(3) on serving size and nutritional information displayed on food labels.
